Papanina Yekaterinburg [Russia]

The Papanina project by KCAP in Yekaterinburg, Russia, is located along the Iset River banks. Close to the city center and the business cluster Yekaterinburg-City, the project provides central urban density that maximises the spatial resources for an attractive new residential neighbourhood.

Yekaterinburg, called Russia's 'third capital' as it is ranked third for tourism, transport, and economic size, makes considerable urban development investments. The city is organising a new embankment of the Iset River between Papanina and Cheluskintsev Streets that, following a design by KCAP, will become a lively and performing new district.

The project area is situated at the Iset River's shoreline, one of the most essential elements of Yekaterinburg's green framework. Such a vital landscape resource is reflected in the design, in the system of local public spaces, and the streets' hierarchy. The mix of functions and central urban density maximise the spatial resources and infrastructure and connect visually to the office cluster of Yekaterinburg-City on the other side of Chelyuskintsev Street.

Quarters with an open perimeter, formed by buildings of different height, are one of the distinctive features of the urban structure in the central part of Yekaterinburg and are at the base of the planning approach. The new development, starting from Papanina with apartment blocks of 9 storeys and towers of about 17 storeys, gradually increases in storeys towards the river and reaches the extension of Yeltsin Street at the embankment with high-rise buildings up to 40 storeys. High urban density is combined with the comfort of the residential environment. The blocks create courtyards that accommodate playgrounds, sports grounds, and kindergartens.

Active commercial ground floors along Chelyuskintsev and Papanina will transform these streets into new urban boulevards, providing services for the residents and becoming an attraction also for those working in Yekaterinburg-City. The pedestrian environment of the area - the car presence is limited - allows all new users to feel comfortable and move around freely. The park, the neighborhood axis leading to the river and promenade, is filled with all kinds of functions, complementing and continuing the public infrastructure of the promenade.

Together with the skyscrapers of Yekaterinburg-City, the high-rise cluster will create a memorable silhouette from the river at the Makarovsky bridge. The previously developed project for the embankment of Workers' Youth should link this section of the Iset Riverbank to the promenade in front of the Yeltsin Centre and allow for extended walking, transition, and cycling routes into the centre. The connectivity with Boris Yeltsin Street is important because it continues through the new district, becoming almost a pedestrian boulevard, extending to the waterfront. In the future, it should end with a new pedestrian bridge across the Iset, leading to the university. This connection will improve the accessibility of the university from this bank, implement new walking routes, and allow residents from the other riverside to use the new embankment and students to have access to attractive new public spaces and an active urban environment.

The new neighbourhood's size and its strategic position along the river, allows creating a unique urban environment with its distinctive character, becoming an exciting place to work and live in a green, compact and friendly district in Yekaterinburg.
