The focal point in the development of Brainport City is the International Knooppunt XL. International Knooppunt XL is the new heart of Eindhoven, function as a turbo on the existing components that have made Eindhoven what it is today over the past 30 years: a thriving, international tech hub. A turbo that is necessary to maintain and strengthen the leading position of Eindhoven and Netherlands. The calling card of Brainport Eindhoven and therefore of great importance to the city, the region and the Netherlands. An area with a high residential quality that sets the tone internationally as the place to study, live, work and relax. Directly connected to economic core regions at home and abroad. Perfectly accessible by train, regional public transport and Eindhoven Airport. But also a place that is ideally accessible by bicycle and a wonderful place to walk.
The masterplan for Fellenoord brings together various ambitions and themes such as healthy urbanisation, climate adaptation, transit-oriented development, the implementation of an urban mobility strategy and the development of a new bus station. The Eindhoven station area plays a key role in the development of the city and strengthening its position as the heart of the high-tech manufacturing industry of Brainport Eindhoven. The station area transforms from a monofunctional area, dominated by infrastructure and offices, into a lively and mixed, dense urban district. In Fellenoord different ambitions and themes come together such as healthy urbanisation strategies, resilience, transit oriented development, implementation of a mobility strategy on an urban scale and the development of a new bus station.
Fellenoord is transforming from a main road for car traffic to a city boulevard. This substantial downgrade will redesign the area with a focus on slow traffic. By reducing the excess of traffic space to a minimum of 40 m, a pleasant, crossable boulevard is created on the one hand, and a lot of new development space on the other. This space is used for a densification strategy resulting in an urban environment consisting of a typology of closed building blocks.
The development of a new bus station and the transformation into a multimodal hub makes Eindhoven station an important international hub. This also offers opportunities to work on Brainport Eindhoven's business card with a beautiful, new station square. In addition, a second station entrance is provided at the location of the Dommel. As a result, the university will soon be more accessible. On the east side, the Dommeldal will be given more space and the green character will be interwoven with the city as much as possible. Stronger programming of the green space gives the Dommel the character of a linear, metropolitan city park on an urban scale.
Height accents can be placed in a flexible way, creating a highly defined network of public spaces. The master plan thus offers scope for various future initiatives. Moreover, these interventions create conditions for a new type of urban area with a new business climate as part of the city center.
