Capitalising on Iceland’s unique advantages - its geographical location, its lead in renewable energy - the Keflavík Airport Area strategic masterplan sets the path for a long-term sustainable development and acts as a catalyst to innovate the Icelandic economy at this strategic location. At the same time, the masterplan aims at creating ‘facts on the ground’ for the neighbouring communities of Reykanesbear and Sudurnesjabear, with projects that have a strong local ownership and answer to existing needs. Furthermore, the plan contains an approach for overcoming barriers to successful planning, such as short-term planning cycles and lack of collaboration, and is underpinned by a place-branding concept.
