Qiangtang River Embankment Upgrading and Reconstruction plan

Featured with world strongest tidal bore, Qiantang River has changed its course many times through thousand years. People has kept on building dike to protect the land since ancient time. This very dynamic balance writes a history about water and city around Hangzhou. Since the large scale poldering from the 1960s, grey concrete riverbanks arming with modern engineer have stabilised the river course. The dynamic equilibrium for thousands of years is set to be still. However climate change has brought urgency to improve and raise the riverbank for better protection. How can water infrastructure be transformed into a resilient lifeline, integrating hydrology, ecology, urbanity and human aspects? KCAP with consulting role on eco-water systems, has applied a multidisciplinary approch to come up with innovative scenario’s and solutions, to make a future proof prototype for similar projects.
