Design for ‘The Gustav’ presented

Recently KCAP presented its design for The Gustav; a high quality residential building situated at the Zuidas in Amsterdam, a prime development location south of the city center and in close proximity to Schiphol Airport.

The building is one of two residential buildings being developed by BPD and AM at the Zuidas. The ‘Gustav’ on the southern edge of the plot offers a variety of different typologies to young professionals and starters at the beginning of their housing career. The terraced building combines 19 studios on the lower levels with 29 more generous apartments on the upper floors. Private gardens, big balconies and roof terraces enrich the dwellings with additional exterior space.

The second building ‘The George’ comprises 47 studios as well as collective spaces and a large roof terrace for the residents to meet, work and relax. On the ground floor a flexible open and transparent plinth functions as a link to the surrounding city life. Both buildings are placed on a common parking garage and are united by a semi-public green courtyard on ground floor level.

Fitting to the young target group the materialisation of ‘Gustav’ is light and modern. Generous windows connect the residences to the surrounding and green exterior spaces. Both buildings are composed of continuous horizontal bands filled with structured brick panels creating one coherent ensemble.
