Floating Park Rotterdam [NL]

The Floating Park is an innovative and sustainable urban planning concept for the Rijnhaven harbour and will significantly enhance the liveability of the inner city. It offers 15,000 m² of greening, 30,000 m² of parking space and 17,000 m² of leisure facilities like an ice skating rink.

Rotterdam’s city centre suffers from a chronic shortage of space and green areas. The quality of living in the city has been squeezed by the intensive construction of buildings in Kop van Zuid and by increased vehicle parking. The large Rijnhaven harbour provides a solution to multiple issues and will significantly upgrade spatial quality in the surrounding parts of the city.

The concept has the shape of a round island. It resembles a disc with a diameter of 185 metres. The park is also round-shaped and encircles a lower-lying inner area with enough space for leisure facilities like an ice skating rink or sports field. Two ring-shaped car park levels big enough for 1,250 vehicles will be built below the park. The structure’s dimensions and circular shape make it impossible for it to topple over and it will be impervious to wave action. The island can be relocated should this prove necessary.

An integral part of the plan is its social embedding in the fabric of the city. The floating park and its facilities will provide work for people distant from the labour market. By so doing the floating park will make a sustainable contribution to Rotterdam and its population in a social sense as well as in terms of urban planning.
