United Fish Auction Scheveningen [NL]

In the coming years, the Northern pier of Scheveningen, the famous sea resort South of The Hague, will be redeveloped and transformed with a program that combines the current fishing industry with recreation. The urban vision for the redevelopment has been designed by KCAP, as well as a new hotel building. A major project of the first phase of this sustainable redevelopment strategy is the renovation and extension of the monumental United Fish Auction building. This typical 1960’s building consists of an office building heading a 300 m shed roofed structure for fish processing and selling.

Due to changing ways of handling fish and online trading the current building is not practical anymore. By extending the building near the offices, the auction can function better and more space becomes available for small fishing industry businesses close to the auction.

With respect for the monumental qualities, the building will be extended and updated for the contemporary fishing industry. The key qualities of the building both exterior and interior are identified, while other parts are changed and renewed. In the central hall of the offices, the big concrete relief is reinstated to its original qualities.
